School's Out - Five Fab Places to Celebrate New Years

It's nearly that time of year again. Christmas may be a few days ago, but it's New Year's that you've had your eye on for some time! According to the ancient Mayans, the world is coming to an abrupt end sometime next year. What a total bummer! Well, we think this is all the more reason to get out this season and party your tail off. But rather then doing the usual like getting all dolled up, spending a small fortune on a dinner and dance ticket only to be disappointed by bad food and cheap champagne, an evening which very well could end with little or no bang, try something new and exciting. Throw caution to the wind, grab a bunch of friends and hop a plane to check out any of a hundred of the most spectacular New Year's celebrations on Earth. If you're doing your degree online, as long as you've got internet access, you don't have to rush back for the beginning of the spring semester! For those of you that have to sit in a conventional classroom, don't worry, it only takes 19 hours to get to Sydney, you'll be back on Monday!

Thai Style New Years

If you've never been to Thailand, attending a Full Moon Party is an absolute right of passage. School's Out, Escape to Paradise!

Another semester draws to a close, and you're up to your eyeballs in books, crinkled papers, and meticulous notes, as you prepare for your final exams.  It's 2 degrees outside, raining buckets and despite only being three o'clock in the afternoon, you look out your window, and it's pitch out. You don't need to be a psychology major to realize that sunshine, turquoise waters and drinks with little peach umbrellas are calling your name my friend. Escape the winter doldrums, and head south for some much deserved R&R. Having traveled all over the world, and back again, I've picked out some of my personal southern faves that are sure to have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the January semester with vigour!

Trinidad, Cuba
Cuba. The rhythm of this island is delicious and contagious. The birthplace of Salsa and resting place of famed revolutionary Che Guevara, this legendary island is the perfect everything holiday. From the sensual romance of Old Havana, the vibrant cobbled stone streets of Trinidad, to the tepid turquoise waters of the Caribbean, you will so far under a Cuban spell, you won't know what hit you. This is the perfect one week getaway, as Cuba's only 90 miles off the coast of Florida! Contrary to what everyone believes, Americans can travel to Cuba, there is no official prohibition. Though you might want to consider flying out of Canada, as flight and accommodation packages are plentiful and offered at more affordable rates.

Montego Bay, Jamaica
Jamaica. This gorgeous island is more than dreadlocks and Maryjane. From the misty Blue Mountains to the pristine shores of Montego Bay, you'll be groovin' to your own beat the moment you step foot off the plane. Indulge in some of the finest rum the caribbean has to offer. Sample some of the worlds best coffee from the breathtaking hills of the Blue Mountains, and relax in the warm tropical breeze while steel drums serenade you all day and evening long. The Jamaican people are warm, witty and always willing to share with you what life on this island is like.

Belize. Feeling adventurous? Dive one of the worlds most exquisite natural reefs, trek around a lush, tropical bird filled jungle or climb an ancient Mayan temple, the possibilities are absolutely endless. With one of the most culturally diverse populations on the Caribbean, and a landscape that will have you clicking away like mad, Belize could not disappoint if it tried. A quick tip; Skip the dodgy chaos of Belmopan altogether, and hop a boat to one of the Cayes to start your vacay in perfect paradise!

Bora Bora, Tahiti

Tahiti. Ok, so you've been super frugal all semester. You've avoided those pricey lattes at Starbucks like the Plague and you've consulted your financial analyst (aka, your mom) and realized you have some extra dough left over for something really special. Tahiti is the ultimate dreamscape. A week in the Islands of Love are sure to mellow you out before another semester of hell. Snag yourself an overwater bungalow and wake up to schools of vibrant sea life every morning. The gentle sound of the ocean lapping at your door may lull you into a tropical coma, but be sure to get out of bed and explore the surrounding mountains, lush shores and dramatic bays of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Boasting some of the best diving in the world, and a seriously awesome set of waves to surf, you won't want to come home!
